How to Connect to Your Mac Remotely

Use this guide when you need to connect to your office Mac from another Mac (such as a laptop) in a remote location.

Set Up Office Mac

  1. Submit a ticket at helpdesk.franklin.uga.edu or email helpdesk@franklin.uga.edu and provide one of the following for the computer you wish to connect to:
    1. last 7 digits of the serial number
    2. the UGA Control Number (located on the silver barcode)
  2. A member of Franklin OIT Client Services will update the power settings of your computer and provide you the IP address. If you'll be connecting from a Windows computer they will also need to setup a VNC password you'll use to connect.
  3. On the day you wish to remotely connect to your computer make sure you leave it turned on after leaving your office.

Set Up Off-Campus Computer

  1. Download and install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client using this link.
  2. Use the instruction on EITS' website to log into the VPN by clicking this link.
You must stay connected to the VPN or you will not be able to connect to your computer.

How to Connect

Mac

  1. Select Finder, then press command+k (or click Go > Connect to Server... in the Finder menu)
  2. In the window that appears, type "vnc://[your IP address]" without quotes

  3. Press the "return" key or click "Connect"
  4. Enter your MyID and password, but type myid\ in front of your MyID

    If you are unable to login when you type in myid\ in front of your MyID, please try using only your MyID and password to log in

  5. You will then be connected to your office computer.
  6. Log out from the Apple menu when you are finished.

Windows

  1. Download and install VNC Viewer: https://www.realvnc.com/en/connect/download/viewer/
  2. Launch VNC Viewer (it's listed under RealVNC in the Start menu), then go to File > New connection...
  3. In the Properties window, enter the IP address of your work computer in the VNC Server field. For the Name field you can enter something to the effect of "UGA work computer".
  4. Click OK to confirm, then double click the new connection you just setup in the main window.
  5. You will be prompted for a password. Enter the VNC password that a Franklin OIT member setup for you and click OK. (Click the "Remember password" checkbox if you don't want to enter this password every time you connect)
  6. You will likely see a notification that the connection is unencrypted. Click Continue. (Click the "Don't warn me" checkbox if you don't want to see this message every time)
  7. You will now be at the login screen of your office Mac computer and can login as you normally would.
  8. Log out from the Apple menu when you are finished.
