How to Install Software and Updates Using the Managed Software Center

The Managed Software Center (MSC) is installed on most FOIT-managed Apple computers. It can be used both to install new software and update previously installed software.

If the computer is currently off campus, please make sure to connect to the VPN using Cisco AnyConnect before using the Managed Software Center. Instructions for connecting to the VPN are available in the article "Using ArchPass to access the VPN". Some larger applications like Microsoft Office can take an hour or more to install over the VPN, if possible you may want to wait until the computer is on campus to install these updates.

Installing Software Using the Managed Software Center

  1. Click the MSC icon in your dock or Applications folder to open it.

  2. In the window that opens, click Software in the left pane to view the list of available software. When you find a program you'd like to install, click the Install button under it to start the installation.

  3. To view the progress of the installation, click Updates in the left pane. Once the program is installed the button under it in the software list will change to Uninstall, in case it needs to be removed or reinstalled.

Updating Software Using the Managed Software Center

  1. Launch the MSC and click Updates in the left pane.
  2. Certain updates, such as those for Firefox, Chrome and Office will attempt to install automatically if they are able. Others will be listed under available updates. Click the Update button next to the updates that need to be installed to move them to Pending Updates.
