Mounting Personal, Departmental, Administrative and EITS (IFS and RIFS) File Shares

Mounting Personal, Departmental, Administrative and EITS (IFS and RIFS) File Shares

Table of Contents

Summary

For many of the devices in Franklin College, your personal and departmental file shares are already mounted for you when you log into your machine.  You may know these as your S drive, Z drive, U drive, or R drive. However, this is not the case for all devices, especially for your own personal devices. Simply follow the instructions below to access your Franklin-hosted data from anywhere.  This process has been tested and confirmed to work with home directories, departmental shares, EITS institutional file shares (IFS), and EITS research institutional file shares (RIFS).

If you are not connected to the UGA network (either directly via a network cable or wirelessly via PAWS-Secure), you will need to first setup a VPN between your device and the UGA network. To do so, simply follow the instructions provided by EITS: http://eits.uga.edu/access_and_security/infosec/tools/vpn/

Once you're connected to the UGA network (either directly or via the VPN), proceed with the directions below for the platform that you're using.

If you wish to connect to an EITS (IFS or RIFS) file share please contact Franklin OIT or EITS for more details on the specific path you should use when connecting (Step 4 for Windows and Step 3 for Mac)

Windows

1. Open a new Windows Explorer window.

2. Right-click on 'Computer' (Windows 7) or 'This PC' (Windows 10) in the sidebar and select 'Map network drive...'. In Windows 11, click "More Options" to show the full right click menu first.

3. Select a letter that you would like to use to represent the share that you'll be mounting. (Within Franklin, departmental shares are typically assigned to S: and personal shares to U:.)

4a. If you'd like to access your departmental share, type the following into the 'Folder:' field: "\\fcncfs4.msmyid.uga.edu\{DEPT}" where {DEPT} is your department's four-letter code.

Map Network Drive window with Drive set to S:, Folder set to \\fcncfs4.msmyid.uga.edu and the Connect using different credentials box checked

4b. If you'd like to access your personal share, type the following into the 'Folder:' field: \\fcncfs1.msmyid.uga.edu\homes\{MYID}  where {MYID} is your UGA MyID.

5. Check the 'Connect using different credentials' box. If you'd like your shares to mount on login, you can also check the 'Reconnect at logon' box. However, remember that you won't be able to access them unless you are connected to the UGA network (either directly or via the VPN). Click 'Finish'.

6. A new box will appear. In the 'User name' field, enter "myid\{MYID}" where {MYID} is your UGA MyID. For example, if your UGA MyID were 'phillip', you would enter "myid\phillip" into the 'User name' field. Enter your MyID password into the 'Password' field. Click 'Ok'.

7. Windows will now attempt to connect your share. If it is successful, you'll now see a new drive listed under 'Computer' (Windows 7) or This PC (Windows 10) in the sidebar. This is your network share. You can use it just like you would use any drive that is connected to your computer. If Windows doesn't connect and instead displays an error, go back to step 4 and make sure that you typed the URL, your MyID (including the 'myid\' prefix) and your MyID password correctly.

If you continue to have issues connecting to either your departmental or personal shares, make sure that you're connected to the VPN (if you're not connected to the UGA network) and that you've verified all of the information that you typed above. If you have any additional issues after that, simply contact your local support hub for assistance by creating a Helpdesk ticket.

OS X / macOS

1. Open a new Finder window.

2. From the 'Go' menu, select 'Connect to Server...' or simply press Command + K.

3a. If you'd like to access your departmental share, type the following into the 'Server Address:' field: "smb://fcncfs4.msmyid.uga.edu/{DEPT}" where {DEPT} is your department's four-letter code.

Connect to Server dialog with the Server Address field set to smb://fcncfs4.msmyid.uga.edu/stat

3b. If you'd like to access your personal share, type the following into the 'Server Address:' field: smb://fcncfs1.msmyid.uga.edu/homes/{MYID}  where {MYID} is your UGA MyID.

4. Click 'Connect'. You may then be presented with an additional dialog back asking you to verify that you wish to connect. A new box should appear requesting your account credentials. In the 'Name:' field, enter "myid\{MYID}" where {MYID} is your UGA MyID. For example, if your UGA MyID were 'phillip', you would enter "myid\phillip" into the 'Name:' field. Enter your MyID password into the 'Password' field. Click 'Connect'. If OS X instead offers an error, double-check that you've entered the URL correctly as shown above.

5. OS X will now attempt to connect your share. If it is successful, you'll see a new drive listed in the sidebar of your Finder windows. This is your network share. You can use it just like you would use any drive that is connected to your computer. If OS X doesn't connect and instead displays an error, go back to step 3 and make sure that you typed the URL, your MyID (including the 'myid\' prefix) and your MyID password correctly.

Note: OS X does not automatically keep file shares mapped, so if you logout/reboot and login again the share won't be mapped. To keep your file share mapped so you don't have to remap it at each login, follow the instructions below:

  1. From the 'Apple' menu, select 'System Preferences'.

  2. Select 'Users and Groups' then click on your user account.

  3. Select 'Login Items' next to 'Password' at the top of the window.

  4. From a Finder window or the desktop, drag your file share into the list of the Login Items window.

  5. Your file share should now map automatically at each login, provided you selected 'Remember this password in my keychain' when your first mapped to it.
