Replacing files
By default, Drupal will rename an uploaded file with the same name as an existing file to a new name, adding a character to the end like “_0” just so it doesn’t overwrite someone else’s file. If you want your links to be updated to the new document (to truly replace a file), you must follow this procedure.
Step 1: Upload your new file
In the URL bar, just type in “imce” to the end of the primary URL for your site. For instance if you web site is http://franklin.uga.edu you will put in your address bar http://franklin.uga.edu/imce. This will bring up the file management console. It may take a while to load because if your site has a lot of files.
Click the “upload” button and upload the new file. Right after you upload the file, you will automatically see the new file right next to the old file. Go to the next step.
Step 2: Delete the old file
Click the old file and choose “Delete”. Before you delete, make sure to notate down the name of the old file (exactly with spaces or dashes or any special characters) because you must rename the new file the way the old file was named. Go to the next step.
Step 3: Rename the new file with the old file name
The rename feature doesn’t pre-populate the file name field at all so you have to actually enter it through typing or copy/paste. Click on the new file and choose “rename”:
Step 4: Test the new file
Make sure you can get to the file by double-clicking the file name. If the file works, and the file name is identical to the old file name, this is completed and you can move onto other files.
