Technology News & Updates
Welcome to the 2025/26 School Year - Be alert for Cyberattacks
As students, faculty, and staff return to campus to begin the school term, please be aware and alert as Cyberattacks and related security intrusions will be likely to also increase. The Office of Information Security provides guidance on handling spam and phishing. This also includes the possibility of social engineering for individuals to gain access to systems, services, or data that they are not approved for through direct attempts at interactions (phone or chat). Be alert and if there are any questionable emails or related technical alerts, please reach out to the Franklin OIT Helpdesk.
New UGA Research Data Stewardship Policy and Guidance
The University of Georgia recently adopted a new Research Data Stewardship policy developed by UGA's Research Data Management Advisory Council (RDMAC). This policy focuses on issues of ownership, sharing, and retention of research data in response to federal public access and data management requirements. Additionally, the RDMAC is promoting steps to improve UGA's services and infrastructure to support research data management, such as the UGA Libraries' new institutional and research data repository, UGA Open Scholar, and research data management planning consultation services offered through RCDM.
Save the date for the November ‘Research Live’ event presented in partnership with the Office of Research (listed below), which will include an overview of the new policy, guidance, and support resources. RCDM is also available to answer questions from individuals or schedule information sessions for UGA units/groups by request.
New AI Chat bot and Tools are Available
With the increasing use and prevalence of Large Language Model-based chatbots and related tools, the central campus IT group (EITS) has added two new tools available to all of campus. Google’s NotebookLM and Gemini (with Data protection) are available to all UGA faculty, staff, and students. The office of IT Contracts and Licensing Administration also now has a contract with Microsoft’s Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT for easier procurement and purchasing of versions with greater functionality. Reach out to ITCLA for more information.
