Technology News & Updates
Welcome to the 2026/27 School Year: Increase in Email Scams, Cyberattacks, and Identity Theft
As students, faculty, and staff return to campus to begin the school term, please be aware and alert as cyberattacks and related security intrusions are also on the increase. The Office of Information Security provides guidance protecting yourself against identity theft and what actions to take if it happens to you. Other types of attack on the rise are spear phishing emails being sent to students and faculty advertising possible student internships and grant opportunities. While appearing to be from actual legitimate faculty, the emails are fraudulent and attempt to have students provide payment or other personal information leading to theft. The guidance is to always make sure emails are coming from @uga.edu email addresses and validate the sender before sending anyone your financial or personal information. If you have an email in question that you know to be fraudulent, forward the email to abuse@uga.edu so that the Office of Information Security can provide guidance and work with the proper groups to address. These types of attach rely heavily on social engineering and may also lead to gaining access to systems, services, or data that they are not approved for through direct attempts at interactions (phone, text, and chat). Be alert and if there are any questionable emails or related technical alerts, please reach out to the Franklin OIT Helpdesk.
Franklin OIT's Laura Rowan Receives 2026 ITMF Excellence Impact Award
The Franklin College Office of Information Technology is proud to congratulate Laura Rowan, Web Developer Specialist, on being named a recipient of the 2026 IT Management Forum (ITMF) Excellence Impact Award, or The Techie. Reminder about Adobe and Zoom Licensing Changes
Over the summer, the UGA campus transitioned the licensing models across two major software products, Adobe and Zoom. Both of these products transitioned from general licensing into more specific and individual-based licenses per instructional unit and operational office. Due to these changes, each major instructional unit (Colleges and Schools) and operational units (e.g Office of Instruction) will have different eligibility criteria and implementation processes used to manage their corresponding licenses. Franklin OIT has provided the following information to help faculty and staff understand these changes and how they apply.

GACRC Teaching Cluster for Fall Semester
”A small high-performance computing cluster devoted exclusively to teaching duties is available for use during the Fall 2026 semester. This cluster includes high-memory nodes and GPU-enabled nodes. The cluster, which is supported by the Georgia Advanced Computing Resource Center (GACRC), was also in use during the spring. Faculty members interested in discussing the capabilities of the teaching cluster and how it might integrate with their coursework should contact the GACRC. For more information, contact Dr. Guy Cormier.” -(EITS August Tech News)
