Account Setup and Enroll in Github Enterprise License

Account Setup and Enroll in Github Enterprise License

Github Enterprise provides space for hosting code repositories or public facing web site content using Github Pages. If you are hosting UGA data, code or content, you must have a github account using your UGA email address on Campus Github Enterprise license.

Whether you want to use Github for code repositories or a front facing web site, you will need to setup an account and then request an invite to the Enterprise License. Follow these steps and we will direct you to the next steps once this part of the process is complete.

Step 1: Create Account.

Go to github.com and click the "Sign up" link in the top right corner. Enter your email address (MUST be a UGA.edu email address), set a password for logging in, and choose a username. Your username will be later in the process. Your username does not have to have UGA in it - it can be any username of your choosing.

After creating your account you will be prompted to do some verifications including an email verification.

Step 2: Login to your account

You can login with your email address or the username you chose.

Step 3: Setup 2FA

In the top right corner click the circular icon and then choose “settings.”

Next click “Passwords and authentication” in the left hand menu and scroll down to the green button that says “Enable two-factor authentication”

Because you already have the DUO application for logging into UGA resources, the easiest option is the QR Code method.

You will see a screen like this:

Open your DUO app on your phone and click the “+” symbol to add a new DUO authentication and choose “Use QR code” option and then scan the QR code shown.

Once you scan it, it will ask you to name the account. Just name it in a way you know what its for. For example: Github. It will immediately give you a code that you will type in the screen that has the QR code on it.

Next it will give you some recovery codes that you should save down in case you ever lose your phone you can use the codes to login with.

Now you are done with this step!

Step 4: For Faculty Access

Use this Request Form to request an invite to UGA Campus Enterprise License.

What to expect next

Once we receive this request we will send you an invite to the Enterprise Cloud License. The invite will come in the form of an email from gtihub. It will have a different name for the invitee depending on who sends you the invite, and the organization name will be different but we wanted you to recognize the email you get is legitimate. Simply click the green “Join” button and you will be added to the enterprise organization.

If you are interested in hosting a public facing web site using Github, please wait until you accept the invite to the Enterprise org. Once you have completed that process, you can proceed with next steps for establishing your Github pages site. Please be mindful of the requirement to be in compliance with federal Title II Accessibility Requirements. Please consult our Digital Accessibility Handbook for more information.

Step 4: For Student Access

If you have a course that requires the use of Github, you should request an invite from your faculty member to their “Organization”. You only need to have a github account to request an invite.
